INTRODUCTION: The three trains a day service via Kensington Olympia continued for 1990. The Sussex Scot is now back in the historic departure time from Brighton at 0920 but only ran to Glasgow Central the portion working to and from Edinburgh had now been dropped. The afternoon train to Manchester now ran via Stoke rather than Crewe. The train to Kent now ran to and from Liverpool Lime Street. Whilst the southbound service was at a much better time the return service was quite late. Summer Saturdays saw the Brighton services running to and from Eastbourne again, with the Manchester service continuing to be the only service of the week that ran via the WCML, involving a loco change at Willesden/ Mitre Bridge. The summer Saturday service to Kent saw the southbound train start very early from Liverpool and in Kent run out via Chatham and Canterbury East and returning, after a 10 minute layover at Folkestone Central, via Ashford and Tonbridge. No service to Kent on Sundays. The Brighton to Glasgow train on Sundays continued to run via Evesham and Worcester. The southbound working ran via the GSWR route through Dumfries. The Wolverhampton to Brighton service and vice versa now ran to and from Derby. As an aside there were in addition to the cross country services there were just five services each way in the morning between Clapham Junction and Kensington Olympia with six in the afternoon and no Sunday service. The 1990 timetable was extended by two months to allow for the completion of the ECML electrification scheme which had a big knock on for Cross Country services.
