There was little change with the 1985-86 timetable. The direct service from Hull and Leeds remained, the two portions combined at Sheffield which included class 08 haulage during the shunting move! There was no balancing service from Brighton for this, only an evening departure for Derby. The outward service for Leeds and Hull originated from Paddington at 0650. A WTT for the Chesterfield to Birmingham area threw up the fact the 0602 Derby to Brighton was one of the few trains to call at Wilnecote and Water Orton.
TIMETABLE and ROUTE:
The overnight service to Gatwick from Manchester re-introduced last year continued as previously on a Friday and Saturday night. The Friday night service was actually a Holidaymaker service to Poole that ran via the Thames Valley then via Acton and Willesden were a Brighton driver ( and conductor?) joined the train to take it southwards. I'm sure there was also an unadvertised stop at Hove for another crew change. The Sunday night service ran via the West Coast mainline....I think.
You may have noticed that the Sunday morning arrival at Gatwick 1O52 doesn't balance with the departures. An acquired Working Timetable shows that this stock formed 5M52 a 06+40 Gatwick Airport to Euston Down Carriage sidings ECS move.
The usual diet of class 47/4's was interrupted for a week or more in June with class 45's once again making a bid for freedom from the Midlands. I have several undated photos from 1984 of peaks on the Brighton to Derby / Wolverhampton service.....I might have the year wrong.....if you know different please let me know. The locomotive change appears to have been split between New Street and Coventry.
Working timetables for the year show all the trains booked for load D315 air braked load that's a 9 cars.
The only exceptions to this are 1O52: 2230 FO Manchester to Poole which shows a D350 timing load, thats 10 cars maximum and also 1O52 2301 SO Manchester to Gatwick service which shows a timing load of D455 and vacuum braked stock.
