INTRODUCTION: After a couple of fairly static years 1988 saw another round of changes and a cut back in service. The basic service was reduced to a daily round trip between Liverpool and Folkestone, a daily Manchester to Brighton round trip and the highlight of the timetable the introduction of "The Sussex Scot" a daily service between Brighton and Edinburgh / Glasgow. TIMETABLE and ROUTE: The inwards service from Manchester formed an afternoon departure for Scotland which gave a very late arrival. The Sussex Scot doesn't gain it's 1S76 running number for another year. Most services were once again routed via the Thames Valley. Saturdays saw the Brighton services running to and from Eastbourne. This in many ways was a modern version of the SAGA holiday trains that ran in the 1970's. Sundays saw the summer Manchester to Brighton service routed via Chester and Shrewsbury. From the winter this train started from Edinburgh and ran Glasgow and then via Dumfries. The northbound Sunday services got no further than Manchester. There was no service to or from Kent on winter Sundays.
